The Project
Nelson Stadium at Carroll College
The Challenge
Turn a newly upgraded athletic stadium into a true multiuse community venue—without risking damage to the synthetic turf
The Need
- Turf protection for heavy loads and foot traffic
- Fast, no-tool installation
- Interlocking tiles with no variance in grade
The Solution
EverBase® 4
An athletic field is built for competition, but at Carroll College, it’s now built for community celebration, too.
The Helena, Montana, college made significant investments in upgrading its on-campus Nelson Stadium, home to the Fighting Saints’ football, men’s and women’s soccer, and softball programs. Improvements included a new synthetic draining playing surface and state-of-the-art lighting, electrical, and technological systems, creating a high-quality environment for training, evening practices, and competition. The upgrades also support emerging sports and expand access for intramural activities across campus.
College leadership saw Nelson Stadium not only as a home for student-athletes, but as a gathering place for the entire Helena community—capable of hosting ceremonies, exhibitions, and large-scale events.
There was just one problem.
Without a protective covering, the field could only handle so much. Heavy vehicles, staging, equipment, and hundreds of guests posed a serious risk to a major campus investment.
Carroll needed a modular flooring solution that could protect the competition surface from heavy loads, vehicles, and pedestrian traffic while remaining simple to install and remove between events. EverBase® 4 delivered the strength, flexibility, and ease of use they were looking for.
“No special tools, equipment, or extensive training are required for installation,” said Director of Athletics Charles Gross. “I can’t imagine an easier system to install. Just know your borders, map it out, and anyone can put it together and take it apart. It does what it’s supposed to do.”
EverBase® 4 includes two compatible systems—one engineered for heavy loads and another for pedestrian traffic—that fit together seamlessly with no variance in grade. This allows the college to customize coverage depending on event needs without creating uneven transitions.
“We install from the 32-yard line to the 32-yard line,” Gross explained for event setups. “With 15 people, we can get it done in two hours. We install a road system with the flooring to move equipment, trusses, sound systems, and staging. The ease of which the tiles fit together and the flow of it—it's everything you want.”

In its first year of use, the field has supported trucks, trailers, staging, speaker systems, large video screens, hundreds of chairs, alumni events, multiple graduation ceremonies, and even a wrestling mat setup. The college plans to host at least five major events annually on the tiles, including one of Helena’s “Alive @ Five” summer concert series events and a volleyball match.
“I would like to increase the size of events in the future,” Gross said. “The EverBase® 4 covering has allowed us to open the facility to the community for a variety of uses, building goodwill and value.”
As the stadium continues to welcome more events and larger crowds, one thing remains the same: the field beneath it all stays protected. At Carroll College, performance still matters, whether it’s under stadium lights or in combination with stage lights.
