Essential Sanitation Practices for A Healthy Pre-K Classroom

Sanitation practices are essential in pre-k classrooms to prevent the spread of illness and to maintain a clean and safe environment for kids. By implementing effective sanitation practices, pre-k teachers and caregivers can help to protect the health and wellbeing of the children in their care.

Perhaps the most important aspect of sanitation pre-k classrooms is  hand washing. Children in the pre-k age range are particularly susceptible to the spread of illness through hand contact, as their curious little hands tend to touch contaminated surfaces and then their faces.

Encourage and supervise regular hand washing before and after engaging in activities that may involve contact with germs, including:

  • Before and after meals
  • After restroom use
  • After outside play
  • Before and after play with shared toys and classroom objects

Another important aspect of sanitation in pre-k classrooms is regular cleaning and disinfecting of surfaces and objects using appropriate cleaning products and techniques. Classrooms can harbor a range of germs and bacteria on toys, equipment, art supplies and furniture.

An efficient way to combat bacterial growth is by outfitting the classroom with toys, furniture and structures that are easy to clean and disinfect. Plastics are common in classrooms because they can be easily sanitized. Using plastic room dividers can prevent the spread of airborne illnesses and can be disinfected with common cleaning supplies. Some toys like giant play blocks can even be sanitized in a dishwasher.

By implementing effective hand washing protocols and cleaning practices, pre-k teachers and caregivers can help to prevent the spread of illness and maintain a clean and safe environment for children.
