The Project
CHS Field

The Challenge
Turf protection without sacrificing efficiency

The Need

  • Reduce labor costs and time with a toolless, lightweight design
  • Protect the stadium’s natural grass, even in extreme heat
  • Provide a safe, anti-slip surface for event attendees
  • Ensure the field was game-ready within 24 hours after concerts

The Solution
EverBase® 4

When CHS Field, home to minor league baseball’s St. Paul Saints, prepared to host its Rock the 4th concert, the team faced a high-stakes question: how do you throw a massive event without striking out on turf protection?

For Marcus Campbell, Director of Field Operations, the answer couldn’t be a compromise. The right flooring solution had to deliver on turf protection, patron safety, and lightning-fast installation—all while keeping costs under control.

Concerts and non-baseball events have become a cornerstone of the St. Paul, Minnesota, ballpark’s business, drawing in new audiences and creating fresh revenue streams. But these events also bring a serious risk: heavy foot traffic and long hours of coverage can wreak havoc on its natural grass.

“Special events are a key part of our business outside of baseball games,” Campbell said. “Although events can provide a good revenue stream, we need to make sure that our field is protected to avoid replacement costs after an event.”

Over the years, CHS Field experimented with a variety of flooring systems, and each came with trade-offs. What Campbell and his team needed was something different: a system as strong as it was smart, as safe as it was simple.

The answer was EverBase® 4. Like a reliable utility player, it covered all the bases—effortless design, lightweight yet sturdy construction, and smart details like aeration holes—quickly standing out as the clear MVP among flooring options.

“EverBase® 4 checked all of our boxes,” Campbell said. “We chose Versare mainly because of the toolless design.”

The Rock the 4th concert put EverBase® 4 to the test, with flooring covering the natural grass field for 15 hours in sweltering July heat that reached the upper 90s. The ballpark transformed into a rock arena, welcoming the high-energy band Hairball, indie-pop trio Yam Haus, and thousands of fans.

The tooless design helped the smaller field crew lay 8,000 square feet in just 45 minutes, which helped operations reduce labor costs for the event. “This process was very easy. Tiles easily tilt and lock together with only one person needed per tile,” said Campbell.

But what did the field look like once the music and the headbanging stopped?

“The flooring held up great,” Campbell said. “It provided good traction for our guests while also protecting our grass. A day after the event, you couldn’t even tell we had it covered for the concert.”

For Campbell and his team, that meant peace of mind. The Saints could roll into their next baseball game without worrying about hidden costs, delays, or unsightly turf damage.

CHS Field’s story proves that venues don’t have to choose between expanding their events calendar and protecting their turf. With EverBase® 4, they can do both—quickly, safely, and cost-effectively.

From ballgames to big stages, CHS Field now has the confidence to say yes to more events, knowing its field will always be ready for the next pitch.
