On September 6, disaster struck the southeastern coast of the United States. Hurricane Dorian hit and devastated many communities along the coast, including many small communities like Ocracoke Island, North Carolina.
Ocracoke Island has a population of less than 1,000 people and is only accessible by ferries. There is a single main road that runs along the island. After the hurricane, only two businesses on the island hadn’t suffered any damage. 90% of vehicles were lost, most homes ruined, and the main road was ripped apart. The Pre-K-12 school, that serves 185 students, was also horribly damaged by the hurricane.
The school district came to Versare looking for room dividers to create classrooms at their temporary middle and high school facility. “Many of those students and some staff have been left homeless and will take years to rebuild their lives. That is why we are working hard to try to get them back in school and some routine as quickly as possible,” said Rich Schwartz, Attorney for Hyde County Schools.
Versare was able to donate four dividers to Ocracoke School to help the community get back on its feet. “The dividers will enable us to divide two rooms: a conference room and a dining hall into six classrooms. As a result of your generosity, we can now continue to focus our funds on our students by replacing classroom and teacher materials for our school,” said Stephen Basnight, Superintendent of Hyde County Schools. See photos of the dividers in use below.
Ocracoke Island reopened to visitors this past Monday, however the community is still in the process of rebuilding. You can learn more about the hurricane damage and rebuilding efforts in Ocracoke Island here.
“We cannot imagine what this would have been like without your dividers! It surely would not look like this! On behalf of Hyde County Schools, Ocracoke student and staff, and all of the Ocracoke community please accept my most sincere thanks and gratitude!” said Basnight.
